Tomato plants produce adventitious roots, meaning if their stems are covered in dark moist soil, the cells will actually reprogram themselves to start growing new roots rather than leaves or stem tissue. It’s a VERY cool survival mechanism that you can use to your advantage to grow sturdier, healthier plants. 🪴
Most gardeners dig a deep vertical hole to encourage adventitious roots, but the top 6 inches of soil are where all the good stuff lives—-warmth, nutrients, happy industrious earthworms. 🪱 By digging a horizontal trench, you can lay down the tomato’s stem (gently curving the leafy tip upward) and help facilitate a massive root network right in that oxygen-rich top layer.
The result is a bigger & healthier plant— and more juicy fat tomatoes! 🍅
